i didn't think people could have such thoughts without feeling like horrible mean freaks, much less brazenly put them on a website.

Haha your post interested me because the Economist recently ran a survey of new media which is increasingly participatory, since many of us write in blogs, rate movies etc. Anyway what's most comforting is that amidst the lacklustre material and even outright bigotry like what you mentioned, we do have genuine insight and knowledge creation, like with the open-source community, Wikipedia and brilliant blogs like
Yawning Bread
. There are all kinds of people out there... but back to your point, it's quite scary that some of those we meet may shroud their closet psychoses in the anonymity of the Internet.
