Very amusing, JM Thompson in 1975:

"it is only a new monarchy that can do what it likes - a King of Prussia or a President of the United States. The old monarchies are slaves of tradition and routine."

ETA - STILL raining. and essay still unfinished. I think I might get about an hour of sleep, if am lucky. Can't believe it's 3 and I'm not done. It is only because of the recent weekend, that in the past 5 days I've gotten more than 15 hours of sleep. I need to jump on a trampoline, or down a whole bottle of Stoli, or smoke pot or something. Damn, was just at UWC on Saturday, should've gotten some pot. Oh my god I've got this sleep headswirly thing going on. History. Ah.
